Involvement in Root Cause Analysis and Patient Safety Culture Among Hospital Care Providers

One approach for involving medical teams in patient safety management is the experience feedback committee (EFC). French researchers conducted a study to determine if patient safety culture, as measured by the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPS), differed regarding care provider involvement in EFC activities. Among more than 3,800 participants at a single hospital in France, 11.3 percent said they participated in EFC activities. A multivariate analysis of variance indicated that all 12 HSOPS dimension scores were significantly different between EFC participants and nonparticipants, independently of gender, hospital department and healthcare profession category. EFC participants had a more developed patient safety culture, with three-quarters of their HSOPS dimension scores significantly higher than those of EFC nonparticipants. The greatest differences in scores related to the "feedback and communication about error," "organizational learning" and "nonpunitive response to error" dimensions. The researchers conclude that participation in EFC activities is linked to higher patient safety culture scores, and they suggest that root cause analysis of the team's routine could help boost patient safety culture.
