A Caregiver’s Perspective on Education: Moving from Defense to Offense

Track: Full Session

Session Number: 2036
Date: Tue, May 23rd, 2017
Time: 10:40 AM - 11:00 AM

Description:

Assuming the role of a caregiver can not only create emotional stress, but as a consequence, the often ignored caregiver burden can impact the patient's care. Karen Doss-Thomas never anticipated the day she would need to fight for the life of Jesse, her husband, faced with a rare disease. Inserting herself into a physician-to-physician conversation at the most unexpected but opportune time, and armed with lessons from education she and her husband's primary physician had received, Karen found herself negotiating for her husband's continue care when many around her believed every other option had been exhausted. As a result, Karen's husband continues to live a productive life with Karen and their two children. In TED-style format excluding slides, Karen intends to walk you through a 20-minute value story noting how the education we support can make a difference not to just the clinicians who receive it, but to the patients and their caregivers who are impacted by it.
