Designing Aligned Professional and Patient/Care Partner Education for Shared Decision Making

Track: Innovation

Session Number: 2032
Date: Mon, Sep 25th, 2017
Time: 4:15 PM - 5:15 PM

Description:

Value-based healthcare calls for patients to receive affordable, patient-centered, high quality care and for clinicians to provide that care with increasing adoption of evidence-based guidelines and practices. These dual goals are best attained when clinicians involve patients and their care partners in shared decision making (SDM). Education of professionals and of patients/care partners traditionally has been treated as separate endeavors, but much of what is known about the benefits of SDM supports the need for aligned education that connects the patient and the healthcare professional. Designing aligned professional and patient/care partner education can present many challenges ranging from differences in education and relevant knowledge, in emotional state, and in thoughts/preferences about treatment options.

This interactive panel discussion, including two individuals with expertise in SDM from the educational design aspect and one with clinical expertise, will showcase the design, development, and evaluation of an innovative set of aligned professional and patient/care partner education activities in the therapeutic area of heart failure. In addition, attendees will evaluate examples—both good and bad—of patient education materials and will view video clips used in patient education. The role of those clips in increasing patient trust, engagement, and confidence in their care team will be discussed. Also presented will be a cost effective method of collecting and reporting quantitative outcome data for both the professional and patient/care partner educational activities.
