The Secrets to Success: Key Strategies to Successfully Implement Relevant, Rural Clinician Education

Track: Short Session (10 minutes)

Session Number: 3033
Date: Wed, May 9th, 2018
Time: 11:30 AM - 11:40 AM

Description:

Live, certified education (CE) tailored to clinicians practicing in rural settings can help support communities that face health emergencies such as those experiencing unprecedented rates of injection drug use which, among other risks, presents opportunities for infectious diseases previously exceedingly rarely seen in rural healthcare settings. However, delivering relevant, CE in rural environments oftentimes presents unique challenges; healthcare professionals practicing in rural communities operate in a different context compared to their urban counterparts, therefore, it cannot be simply assumed that CE designed for a national audience is an effective method to produce tangible practices changes within rural America. Delivering meaningful, CE requires a strategic approach, one that must leverage community partners to identify regional needs, resources, and healthcare infrastructure to maximize educational impact. In addition, flexibility in CE format is critical to meet the unique circumstances of busy rural providers. Time sensitive, convenient, virtual education that facilitates provider-to-provider interactions and tailors education to fit within pre-existing meeting schedules can help maximize provider engagement and close local practice gaps such as those related to the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases such as hepatitis C virus which result from a changing local environment and present healthcare providers with challenges outside their usual practice patterns.
