Defining the Profession

Healthcare CPD Areas of Knowledge

The Alliance is proud to be the only association for healthcare continuing professional development (CPD) professionals to advance competencies through our Healthcare CPD Areas of Knowledge. It is designed to guide all educational programming the Alliance provides to the healthcare CPD community.

Leveraging our National Learning Competencies© (NLCs), the Areas of Knowledge encompasses the recommended knowledge, skills, and attitudes that healthcare CPD professionals can acquire and be proficient in to successfully design, develop, deliver, and manage continuing education professional development.

The Areas of Knowledge advance the healthcare CPD profession and provide a clearly defined role for the healthcare CPD professional. Advancement of our members and the CPD profession navigates the changing healthcare environment, promotes best practices, and improves patient outcomes through empowerment.

National Learning Competencies (NLCs)

The Alliance National Learning Competencies© (NLCs) are unique in the field of continuing education. Drawing upon the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition, the NLCs provide a staged approach to the development of proficiency and expertise in the continuing education profession. The eight Competency Areas represent different yet interconnected components that, taken together, form the foundation for excellence in the profession.

The NLCs are designed to describe the competencies (abilities) needed for success and to outline a professional development career path. Self-assessment and monitoring of performance in each of the eight Competency Areas supports continuing professional development (CPD). The NLCs will guide your professional performance, development, and career growth.
