Rutgers School of Nursing has partnered with Caregility to incorporate virtual nursing training, including artificial intelligence-enabled care delivery, into its undergraduate curriculum as health systems increasingly adopt virtual care models. The program will instruct students not only about the technical aspects of virtual nursing used in tele-ICU, hospital-at-home and connected patient-room settings, but also communication, patient education, privacy, ethics, troubleshooting and collaboration with remote care teams. Through simulation training using Caregility-provided equipment, students will practice scenarios such as remote patient assessments, care coordination, technology failures and escalation of clinical concerns in a safe environment. "Simulation labs are an avenue for our learners to be in a safe space and use the tactile skills they need for nursing care before the clinical setting," says Angela Starkweather, dean and professor at the Rutgers School of Nursing. Rutgers plans to assess students' virtual nursing competencies through repeated simulations and feedback, while emphasizing measures such as patient safety, early intervention, care coordination and patient satisfaction to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual nursing in improving healthcare quality.
