About the CHCP Exam
The updated CHCP exam, launched in June 2025, reflects current trends, real-world practices, and core competencies aligned with the Alliance’s National Learning Competencies (NLCs) and the Educate the Educator curriculum. Based on a national job analysis, the exam assesses competencies across 10 core domains:
- Educational design and adult learning principles
- Program management and leadership
- Outcomes measurement and evaluation
- Accreditation and regulatory compliance
- Interprofessional collaboration
- Data use and technology integration
- Ethics and professional responsibility
- Communication and stakeholder engagement
- Organizational strategy
- Learner needs analysis

How to Apply and Register for the CHCP Exam
Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility
Complete the CHCP Eligibility Form to describe your involvement in continuing professional development (CPD) for healthcare professionals. The Eligibility Committee will review your responses and notify you once approved.
Eligibility Requirements (must meet 2 of 3):
- Formal Education
- CPD Informal Education/Engagement
- Work Experience
Note: You have one year from your approval date to take the exam.
Step 2: Submit Your Application
After submitting the eligibility form, please allow up to three weeks for review. If approved, you will receive an email with instructions to proceed to payment and registration.
Step 3: Register and Schedule Your Exam
Once payment is complete, you will receive an email with exam scheduling details. You can choose to take the exam at a testing center or remotely.
- To schedule: Visit the registration portal (link will be provided in the email), select ‘CHCP Exam’, and enter your confirmation number, user ID, and password.
- Choose your preferred date, time, and location (in-person or remote).
Testing Options and Locations
- The CHCP exam is a computer-based test (CBT) offered at over 200 sites across the U.S. and Canada during four annual testing periods.
- Remote testing is now available. Select this option when registering.
- Find testing sites on the Testing Site Map.
Exam Format
The CHCP exam includes 160 multiple-choice questions with four answer options each. Of these, 150 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest items used to evaluate future content. Candidates have three hours to complete the exam. The exam is closed-book and offered in two formats:
- In-person testing at over 400 Prometric centers across the U.S. and Canada
- Remote proctoring, allowing candidates to test securely from a location of their choice
Exams are available during four annual testing windows, offering flexible scheduling. The CHCP exam is administered by Prometric, a trusted provider of secure, professional testing services.
Exam Results
- Most candidates receive immediate pass/fail notification upon exam completion at testing centers.
- Electronic scoring allows instant results printed and given on-site by the exam proctor.
- Successful candidates’ names are posted on Alliance’s National Registry after each test period.
