The Certified Healthcare CPD Professional (CHCP) credential is maintained through recertification every three years. The purpose of recertification is to ensure that CHCP professionals maintain and enhance the knowledge, skills, and professional engagement required for competent practice in healthcare continuing professional development (CPD).
Recertification promotes ongoing professional development, continued competence, and alignment with current industry standards and practices.
Why Recertification?
Healthcare CPD continues to evolve in response to changes in accreditation requirements, educational methodologies, healthcare regulations, and professional practice. The three-year recertification cycle supports continued competence while providing CHCP professionals with an appropriate period to complete ongoing professional development and remain actively engaged in healthcare CPD.
CHCP Recertification Requirements
To maintain CHCP certification, CHCP professionals must complete requirements in both of the following areas during each three-year recertification cycle:
Section 1: Healthcare Professional CPD Education or Engagement
Choose either education (1A) or engagement (1B) within the last three years:
1A: Formal or Informal Education
- Complete at least 20 hours of education related to the CPD of healthcare professionals.
- Note: Clinical education or job-related training does not count toward this requirement.
1B: Professional Engagement
- Demonstrate meaningful involvement in activities that support healthcare CPD. Eligible options include:
- Volunteering: At least 12 hours of service with organizations dedicated to CPD, including medical societies, associations, accrediting bodies, or peer review activities.
- Membership: At least 1 year of membership in a professional organization related to healthcare CPD (e.g., Alliance, GAME, NAMEC, AMEE, MAACME, GACME, CACME, IACME, SACME). You may be asked to describe how your membership supports CPD.
- Other Engagement: Publishing or presenting CPD-related content, or other activities that demonstrate professional contributions to CPD.
Section 2: Work Experience
- A minimum of three years of part-time or full-time employment or contracted professional experience in healthcare CPD within the last three years.
- Long-term unpaid volunteer positions that focus on healthcare CPD may also qualify.

The CHCP recertification requirements support continued competence through both professional development and professional practice. Education and professional engagement help CHCP professionals remain current with evolving practices and actively contribute to the profession, while work experience supports the continued application of knowledge in real-world settings.
CHCP Recertification Process
- Complete the Recertification Application by providing documentation of your Section 1 and Section 2 activities.
- Submit the required supporting documentation and recertification fee.
- Receive notification: Alliance staff will contact you once your certification status has been determined.
- Please allow 3–4 weeks for committee review after submission.
Please note that the cost of recertification is $395 for members and $525 for non-members.
Documentation and Verification
CHCP professionals must attest to completion of all recertification requirements at the time of renewal. Applications may be subject to documentation review, random audit, or requests for additional supporting documentation.
Failure to Recertify
CHCP professionals who do not meet the recertification requirements by their certification expiration date will have their certification status changed to expired and may no longer use the CHCP designation.
To regain certification after expiration, individuals must reapply for certification, meet the current eligibility requirements, and successfully pass the CHCP certification examination.
Appeals
CHCP professionals may appeal adverse recertification decisions in accordance with the CHCP Appeals Policy.
